Clinical‑trial expenses have climbed steadily for over a decade, squeezed by tighter capital markets, escalating personnel and material costs, and shifting global trade policies. A recent Clinical Trials Arena feature takes a comprehensive look at this challenge—and spotlights the perspective of our own Heather Purvis, Director of Clinical Operations at Title21 Health Solutions.
The Staffing Challenge
Purvis identified staffing as one of the most significant contributors to rising trial costs. She explained that clinical trials require highly skilled professionals who can adapt and think critically—qualities that come with extensive experience and training. “These staff members are highly sought after,” Purvis noted, underscoring the competitive demand for top talent.
Compounding the issue, recent cuts to National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants have forced teams to do more with less. “With the removal of funding, the cost of staff is going to increase even further,” Purvis said. She warned that this trend is one of the biggest challenges currently facing the industry.
The Ripple Effect of Tariffs
Purvis also addressed the potential impact of impending tariffs on clinical trials. She shared that some colleagues have pivoted away from promising trials due to cost concerns. “These could have been potentially promising lines of clinical research, but unfortunately, they’ve had to limit themselves because they just couldn’t afford to handle the impending tariffs,” she explained.
While the extent of tariff-related cost increases remains uncertain, Purvis highlighted the risk of longer development timelines and reduced patient numbers, which could compromise data quality for regulatory submissions.
Navigating Uncertainty
Purvis’s observations underscore the need for strategic planning in an unpredictable landscape. As the industry grapples with rising costs and external pressures, her insights remind us of the importance of adaptability and resource optimization in clinical trial management.
